DISHWASHER #2 / STUDOR AIR ADMITTANCE VALVE. The Studor air admittance valve is venting the dishwasher to the right. The Studor company's moto is "Don't go through the roof." Note the enclosure for the valve is sitting on the shelf and the access panel to the dishwasher drain on the lower right of the cabinet. IMG 2479

DISHWASHER #3 / VENT WASTE VENT DIAGRAM I had feared installing the dishwasher because it is not located next to the sink. Normally a dishwasher simply dumps into the disposal under the sink and takes advantage of the existing kitchen drain and venting system. In my case, I needed to install the dishwasher opposite the sink. In the old days you had to two options: (1) install a traditional auxiliary vent that either ties into the main vent or goes all the way through the roof by itself; or (2) install a loop vent. Both options are bad.

DISHWASHER #4My consultant told me about the Studor Air Admittance Valve. It's tied to my dishwasher P trap (right) that is beneath my kitchen floor with a 90 degree sanitary tee (left) that brings a 1 1/2 inch PVC pipe back up through my floor beneath my cabinet where my air admittance valve is installed. Note the sanitary tee with a clean out at the top of the trap and flexible water supply line for the dishwasher in the foreground. IMG 2466

The drain continues out of the 90 degree sanitary tee through a short piece of PVC pipe to a conventional 45 degree elbow and a street 45 degree elbow ("street" refers to a elbow that can connect directly inside another elbow or other connector. These inturn connect via a short pipe to a 90 degree elbow that takes my drain down around the venting for the furnace and water heater. This pattern continues all the way to the main drain waste vent pipe, all the while keeping the horizontal runs on the pipe on the required 1/2 inch per foot fall. IMG 2468

The pattern of double 45 degree elbows cotinues down around the venting for the furnace and water heater all the way to the main drain waste vent pipe to a 45 degree street elbow to a 3 by 2 inch reducing wye, all the while keeping the horizontal runs on the pipe on the required 1/2 inch per foot fall.
