I failed in my first attempts to combine two photos using the Gradient tool in GIMP. I am writing this little note so that I remember how to correctly blend two images using a gradient in a layer mask as described in chapter 4.3.3 of "Groking the Gimp." I used the following Seven steps.
STEP ONE. This Shuttle is a jpg. It's dimensions are 640px wide by 539px high. Select the Space Shuttle Image using the menu: /Select/All (Figure 1).
Copy the image and create a new image using the menu: /File/New. This will be our active image window.
NOTE: You can also right click the image to get your menu to drop down.
When the dialog box opens, increase the height of the image in the active window to 1000px and click OK to apply the settings. Paste the Shuttle into bottom of the the active window.
