STEP FIVE. Choose the Gradient tool from the Toolbox. We are going to use the Active Background and Foreground colors. These are the Black and White rectangles in the above image.
Your GIMP may have different colors that the GIMP may remember from a prior project. If you need to change either Foreground and/or Background, then double click on the either rectangle. When the dialog box opens, just assign either 000000 (black)or ffffff (white) respectively (this is hexagonal color notation). You can toggle either color to the foreground by clicking on the two-tailed arrows to the right of the color indicators.
After you have set the Active Foreground Color and the Active Background Color to black and white, respectively, your Tool Box should look like this image (Figure 5).
NOTE: These are the default settings. In most cases you shouldn't have to change anything.
