Our Original .jpg
Figure 1
I failed in my first attempts to combine two photos using the Gradient tool in GIMP. I am writing this little note so that I remember how to correctly blend two images using a gradient in a layer mask as described in chapter 4.3.3 of "Groking the Gimp." I used the following Seven steps.
STEP ONE. This Shuttle is a jpg. It's dimensions are 640px wide by 539px high. Select the Space Shuttle Image using the menu: /Select/All (Figure 1).
Copy the image and create a new image using the menu: /File/New. This will be our active image window.
NOTE: You can also right click the image to get your menu to drop down.
When the dialog box opens, increase the height of the image in the active window to 1000px and click OK to apply the settings. Paste the Shuttle into bottom of the the active window.

GIMP Tool Box Move Tool.
Figure 1.1
Use the Move tool from the toolbox to position the Shuttle image. The Move tool's icon is made up of two crossed arrows. The GIMP indicates a tool is in use with a "grayed out" box as in the above image.
Select the /Dialogs/Layers to open the Layer dialog and click the Anchor icon to fix the selection to the Background in the active window.
NOTE: You can also click on the the active window's Background outside of the selection to fix it in place.

Layer Dialog
Figure 3.1
Because the transparent layer is "active," Saturn is actually pasted on to a floating selection. You can see this by selecting /Dialogs/Layers.
Use the Move tool again to position the Saturn image at the top of the new Shuttle image. Now click on the Anchor icon at the bottom of the /Dialogs/Layers to anchor Saturn to the New Layer.
